How to describe the synth you hear in your head

Answer in brief

Say what job the sound does, where it sits in pitch, how it moves while a note plays and what it sounds like in plain sound words. Describe the sound itself instead of naming a product or an artist.

Name the role first

The role tells a tool more than any adjective. A bass, a lead, a pad, a pluck, keys, a bell or an organ each implies a range, a length and a place in the mix. “A pad” already means slow, wide and sustained before you add another word.

Give the register

Say how low or high the sound lives. “A sub bass that stays under the kick” and “a bass with a growl you can hear on laptop speakers” are both basses, yet they need different engines. For leads and keys, say whether they sit above the vocal or under it.

Describe the movement

Much of a synth’s character is in what happens over time. Say how the note starts (a hard click or a soft swell), what it does while held (steady, slowly opening or wobbling with the beat) and how it ends (cut short or a long tail). Say what you want under your hands too, such as a brighter tone when you play harder or vibrato on the mod wheel.

Name the character in sound words

Use words for what you hear: warm, glassy, hollow, buzzy, breathy, metallic, round or nasal. One or two are enough. If you want wear such as tape hiss or a dusty edge, ask for it by name, and if you want the sound clean, say that too.

Refer to sounds, not brand names

“A Serum bass” or “that famous preset” tells a tool very little, because one synth can make thousands of sounds and a preset name is not a description. Describe what you hear in the reference instead. Two detuned saw waves through a low-pass filter that wobbles in time is something any capable synth can aim for.

Weak and stronger descriptions

  • Weak: “a cool bass”. Stronger: “a dark sub bass for a slow trap beat, round and clean, with a short pluck at the start and a long smooth tail”.
  • Weak: “an ambient pad”. Stronger: “a wide airy pad that fades in slowly and grows brighter the longer the chord is held”.
  • Weak: “a lead like a famous producer”. Stronger: “a bright buzzy lead above the vocal with a little glide between notes and vibrato on the mod wheel”.
  • Weak: “retro keys”. Stronger: “soft keys with a gentle bell tone that turns brighter when you play harder”.

Refine one quality at a time

Treat the first result as a starting point. Change one quality per request, such as “less bright” or “a shorter release”, so you can hear what moved. If the tool gives you controls, try them before writing another request, since a knob is often the faster fix.

The practical advice here is our own. A maker's description of its product is not a test of how it performs.
